General truths (Present Simple) vs Events happening at the time of speaking (Present Continuous)

We use the Present Simple to talk about general facts. In other words, things that are simply true. We use the Present Continuous to talk about actions happening at the time of speaking. Some signal words for the Present Continuous are: at the moment, now, and right now.

  • Lawyers revise legal documents. (Present Simple) FACT
  • I’m revising my report right now. (Present Continuous) NOW
  • He performs his tasks at the highest level. (Present Simple) FACT
  • He’s performing his tasks at this moment. (Present Continuous) NOW
